Firefox: the browser on fire
Mozilla Firefox: l'alternativa a Internet Explorer
Presentazione di Mozilla Firefox, il browser open source sicuro e veloce.
It's called Mozilla Firefox It's a browser, a program to surf the internet
I'm inside it...
Firefox is currently the second-most used browser worldwide, after Internet Explorer for Windows, (the most used one probably only because natively installed on Microsoft operating systems).
On June 17. 2008 version 3 was released. It had million downloads in hours setting a Guinness World Record.
Firefox is cross-platform: it runs on Linux (of course! it's Open Source!) and also on Windows and Mac. Clearly it's free.
By the way Firefox in English means... ... red panda! In fact its logo represents a fox made of fire...
Like if a company named "sea lion" had a lion at the beach as logo. Let's have a look at the extraordinary features of the lion errr, the fox... the panda... oh, well: of the beast.
Safety and updates
When surfing the Internet you don't want scams and viruses.
For every address you type Firefox queries the Google black list and warns you about possible dangers. It's very effective for preventing visiting sites with viruses or dangerous programs.
Another popular scam is phishing: fake sites masquerade as institution or bank websites to steal your password or PIN. To prevents such scams digital certificates have long been developed to guarantee individual identities. If the website has a certificate Firefox turns green and gives you notice.
You can also get additional information about the current site: your visits count password access last change date and much more.
Not to forget Firefox is Free Software guarded by thousands of experts that report even the smallest bug.
Firefox regularly checks for new patches or new versions and gives you notice. You can update with just two clicks!
A very useful feature is the CTRL key command that can be used for tons of operations.
For example, dragging while holding down CTRL duplicates a tab with all its navigation history. That's a handy feature to follow different searches at once.
To copy different parts of a text page you can use CTRL and select multiple portions of text to copy and paste.
CTRL + and CTRL - zoom the page in and out preserving the objects aspect ratio.
You know those annoying sites that ... pop!
…open up ad windows before our eyes? Well, Firefox blocks them by default.
If you want it's you that let that site ...pop!
The Awesome Bar is for writing web addresses and also for searching your bookmarked and recently visited sites. If no matches are found, Firefox searches Google and Wikipedia.
Using the Awesome Bar you can easily subscribe to RSS feeds, by clicking on the RSS icon - invented by the Mozilla Foundation - or bookmark webpages by clicking on the star icon.
You can later organize your bookmarks creating even custom folders. The tools for organizing bookmarks are amazing.
Speaking of bookmarks ... if you are moving from Internet Explorer to Firefox, don't be scared: you can easily import your old bookmarks! Now let's move to the field on the right.
Search, Add-ons and themes
Google is the default search engine, but you can choose whatever you want: Yahoo!, Wikipedia, an Italian-English dictionary, an etymological dictionary, the white pages, ...
There are more than, search tools. The most popular are Youtube and a search tool for torrent files ... You little scamps!
Firefox is really the number one for add-ons, that are small programs you can download. They are built to perform specific operations easily. For example:
You want to download videos from YouTube or other video sharing sites?
Thanks to the Video Downloadhelper add-on you can easily do that and even set an automatic file conversion to a specific format.
You hate ads on web sites? AdBlock Plus is you friend: it blocks them all!
These are just two examples from the hundreds of add-ons available for free download from the Mozilla website. One for every whim or need.
Theme management: You do not like the theme set by default by your operating system? You would like a daring theme? A space theme? A sugary theme? A plain one? Choose the style that suits you!
Are you still undecided as to which browser to use?
You might say: "I am used to another browser..."
Yes, just like if you were on a transcontinental flight, they offered you a first class seat for free and you refused because already settled with your cabin luggage.
